Trabzon University was established in Akçaabat, Trabzon, by Law No. 7141, published in the Official Gazette dated May 18, 2018 and numbered 30425. Previously, several faculties, schools, and institutes under Karadeniz Technical University, including the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Communication, State Conservatory, School of Physical Education and Sports, Vocational Schools of Higher Education, Institute of Educational Sciences, and various vocational schools, were transferred to Trabzon University. Additionally, a new faculty named Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences was established, the School of Physical Education and Sports was transformed into the Faculty of Sports Sciences, and the Institute of Educational Sciences was renamed as the Institute of Graduate Education.
On September 6, 2018, by Presidential Decree No. 2018/1600 published in the Official Gazette numbered 30527, Prof. Dr. Emin Aşıkkutlu was appointed as the Rector of Trabzon University. Prof. Dr. Emin Aşıkkutlu assumed the role of Rector in a handover ceremony held at the Faculty of Education building on September 11, 2018, succeeding Prof. Dr. Süleyman Baykal, who had been serving as the Rector of Karadeniz Technical University since its inception. Additionally, Dr. Atilla Çimer, a faculty member of the Faculty of Education, was appointed as the General Secretary of the University.
