The Turkish-German University (TAU), located in Istanbul, is a state university established based on an agreement between the Republic of Turkey and the Federal Republic of Germany, as published in the Official Gazette No. 30425 dated May 18, 2018. Its objective is to merge the most significant achievements and successes of Turkish and German higher education traditions in the fields of research and education, and to make significant contributions to scientific, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two countries. TAU defines itself as a research university in academic classification and offers tuition-free education. It is a multilingual university where undergraduate programs are mainly conducted in German, while graduate programs are offered in either German or English, depending on the need and comprehension level. Through collaboration with German partner universities, TAU plans to issue German university diplomas ('double degree' or 'joint degree') alongside Turkish university diplomas. Situated in Istanbul's Beykoz district, TAU commenced its services with several undergraduate and graduate programs in the 2013/2014 academic year, and by the 2021/2022 academic year, the number of undergraduate programs has increased to fifteen. Proficiency in German is not a requirement for admission to TAU; for those who do not speak German, a language preparatory class provides one year of German language education. Individuals with a high level of proficiency in German (determined through a language examination) can start their education directly.
