Istanbul Okan University was established by the Okan Culture, Education, and Sports Foundation in 1999. The foundation was established in 1986 to conduct research in social, cultural, and economic fields, develop solutions to problems, and assist the government in implementing these solutions.
The university began its education in the academic year 2003-2004. Among the first faculties opened were the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In the same year, the Institutes of Social Sciences and Natural Sciences were also established. Among the first students were those selected from the top 1100 candidates in Turkey, and Istanbul Okan University quickly rose to the top 7 among foundation universities.
The university is known for its slogan "The University Closest to Business Life" and offers its students extensive internship opportunities. It has cooperation projects with institutions such as Turk Telekom and DEIK (Foreign Economic Relations Board). The Continuous Education Center (OKSEM) was established in January 2004. In the academic year 2004-2005, the departments of German and Russian Translation and Interpretation, Industrial Engineering, and International Trade were also opened. The university became a preferred institution by students ranking within the top 400 in Turkey.
In 2006, rapidly growing, the university moved to its new and modern Tuzla Campus, offering students comprehensive education and living spaces with modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and sports facilities. In 2007, Istanbul Okan University graduated its first students and is ambitious about preparing its students for the business world.
The Social Center, opened in 2008, offers various social and sports facilities such as a pocket cinema, sauna, cafeteria, and shopping center. In the academic year 2008-2009, the Faculty of Law and Vocational School started their education. The School of Health Sciences was established in 2009, starting its education activities in the field of health.
In 2010, the university expanded its international collaborations, signing education agreements with China and Russia. In 2011, Istanbul's first Russian Culture Center was opened within the university. In 2012, the Institute of Health Sciences and Vocational School of Health Services started their education.
In 2013, the foundations of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry were laid, and educational activities began. In the academic year 2014-2015, the university continued its education with 8 faculties, 2 vocational schools, and 2 vocational high schools. In the same year, it became the first Turkish university to have the ISO 27001 Information Security Standard.
In 2015, the capacity of student dormitories was increased, and a conservatory was opened. In 2016, Istanbul Okan University Hospital opened, offering modern medical facilities and comprehensive health services. In 2017, the Faculty of Dentistry Hospital opened, and in 2018, the Bekir Okan Art, Culture, and Congress Center became operational.
