Karadeniz Technical University (KTU), established by the proposal of Trabzon Deputy Mustafa Reşit Tarakçıoğlu and 28 colleagues, was founded by the law numbered 6594 on May 20, 1955, making it the first university established outside Istanbul and Ankara. Approximately eight years after its establishment, on September 19, 1963, with the law numbered 336, the University was granted the positions of Rectorship and Faculty, and the faculties of Basic Sciences, Construction-Architecture, Mechanical-Electrical, and Forestry were established. KTU commenced its educational activities on December 2, 1963, at the primary school building of Trabzon Atatürk Primary School in Esentepe Neighborhood and moved to its current central campus in 1966.
Continuing its development, KTU obtained the Faculty positions for Earth Sciences and Medicine with the law numbered 1659 dated January 4, 1973. Following the enactment of Law No. 2547 on Higher Education in 1981, KTU continued to grow, opening new faculties and departments.
Today, KTU offers 78 undergraduate and 34 associate degree programs within 12 faculties, 1 school, and 8 vocational schools. Additionally, there are 80 master's and 57 doctoral programs in 6 institutes. With its strong academic staff, 31,000 students, and over 248,000 alumni, KTU is one of Turkey's leading universities.
