Mersin University was established by Law No. 3837, which was passed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on July 3, 1992, and commenced its activities on November 10, 1992.
During the academic year of 1993-1994, it started its education and training activities by admitting students to the Faculty of Science and Literature, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, School of Tourism and Hotel Management, Mersin Vocational School, Gülnar Vocational School, Mut Vocational School, Tarsus Vocational School, as well as to graduate programs in the Institutes of Social Sciences and Natural Sciences.
Since its establishment, the university has increased its number of faculties to 17, schools to 7, vocational schools to 11, institutes to 5, and research centers to 40.
