Middle East Technical University (METU) was established on November 15, 1956, under the name "Middle East High Technology Institute" with the aim of contributing to the development of Turkey and Middle Eastern countries, particularly in the fields of natural and social sciences. The "Law on Establishment and Preparations" for our university, which granted it special status and legal personality, came into effect on January 29, 1957. The Law No. 7307, which formalized the establishment of METU, was enacted on May 27, 1959.
METU has introduced many innovations to the Turkish higher education system and has been a pioneer in modern education. After spending its initial years in a small building owned by the Retirement Fund in Kızılay and barracks located behind the Turkish Parliament, the university moved to its current location in 1963. Following the opening of the Department of Architecture in 1956, the Department of Mechanical Engineering began its education in the spring of 1957. The faculties of Architecture, Engineering, and Administrative Sciences were established in the 1957-1958 academic year, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences was completed in 1959. The Faculty of Education was established in 1982. Currently, METU offers 41 undergraduate programs across five faculties.
Within the scope of METU, 107 master's and 69 doctoral programs are conducted in the Institutes of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Informatics, Applied Mathematics, and Marine Sciences. The Institute of Marine Sciences operates in İçel-Erdemli. The language of instruction at METU is English, and preparatory class students receive English education from the School of Foreign Languages.
Since its establishment, METU has become one of Turkey's leading institutions with its scientific level, cultural impact, and qualified graduates. It has approximately 791 faculty members (professors, associate professors, assistant professors), 225 instructors, 1,273 research assistants, and over 28,000 students. The total number of graduates is over 120,000.
