Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University was established in 1992. At the beginning of the university's establishment, there were the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Fisheries, Technical Education, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Institutes of Science and Social Sciences, and the School of Tourism and Hotel Management. The first higher education units in Muğla were the Muğla School of Business Administration, founded in 1975 under the Ankara Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences and later affiliated with Dokuz Eylül University in 1982, and the Muğla Vocational School, founded in 1989, also affiliated with Dokuz Eylül University. With the establishment of the university, the Muğla School of Business Administration was incorporated into the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, and the Muğla Vocational School became part of the university. The academic year 1993 marked the intake of the first students with two active faculties and two vocational schools.
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the School of Health Services Vocational School were established in 1992, the Institutes of Science and Social Sciences in 1994, Ula Ali Koçman Vocational School and Ortaca Vocational School in 1994, Milas Sıtkı Koçman Vocational School and the Faculty of Sports Sciences (School of Physical Education and Sports) in 1995, the Faculty of Health Sciences (Muğla Health School), the School of Health Services Vocational School (Marmaris Health School), and the Faculty of Technical Education in 1997, Fethiye Ali Sıtkı Mefharet Koçman Vocational School in 1998, Dalaman Vocational School in 1999, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Tourism (School of Tourism and Hotel Management) in 2001, the Faculty of Health Sciences (Fethiye Health School) in 2002, the Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Fisheries, and Yatağan Vocational School in 2004, the Faculty of Engineering and Datça Kazım Yılmaz Vocational School in 2006, the Institute of Educational Sciences in 2010, the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Technology, and Köyceğiz Vocational School in 2011, the Institute of Health Sciences, Bodrum Maritime Vocational School, and İçmeler Tourism Vocational School in 2012 began admitting their first students. The School of Foreign Languages (Sıtkı Koçman School of Foreign Languages) commenced its educational activities in 2005. The Faculty of Business Administration was established in 2014, Dalaman Civil Aviation School in 2017, the Faculty of Architecture, Milas Veterinary Faculty, Kavaklıdere Martyr Mustafa Alper Vocational School, and Seydikemer Applied Sciences Vocational School in 2018 admitted their first students.
Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University started with only one department, 1,128 students, and three programs. However, today, the university, which was established with the aim of providing reliable education in the fields of social sciences, natural sciences, education sciences, arts and humanities, and vocational training, has developed rapidly. It currently serves on a closed area of 208,000 square meters with 21 faculties, 4 institutes, 3 vocational schools, 16 vocational schools, and 47 research and application centers. With this growth, it has become a young but proud university with 44,607 students, 1608 faculty members, and 827 administrative staff.
