Siirt University was established on May 29, 2007, under the law numbered 2809, published in the Official Gazette numbered 26536. Since 2007, the university has been continuing its educational, teaching, research activities, and public service functions. The foundation of the university dates back to a two-year Teacher Training Institute established in 1976, affiliated with Dicle University. This institute was renamed Siirt Teacher Training College in 1982 and Siirt Faculty of Education in 1992.
Siirt University offers a broad range of educational programs with 10 faculties, 3 schools, 4 institutes, and 6 vocational schools. The faculties include Education, Engineering, Science and Literature, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Agriculture, Theology, Veterinary, Fine Arts and Design, Health Sciences, and Medicine. The schools provide education in Physical Education and Sports, Foreign Languages, and Tourism Management and Hospitality. The institutes conduct research in Science, Social Sciences, Living Languages, and Health Sciences. The vocational schools include the Social Sciences, Technical Sciences, Health Services, Kurtalan, Eruh, and Design Vocational Schools.
The university also hosts 19 research and application centers. These centers cover a wide range of areas including Beekeeping, Viticulture, Science and Technology, Experimental Animals, Animal Health, Women's Issues, Career Planning, Public-University-Industry Collaboration, Goat Research, Siirt and Regional Handicrafts, History and Culture of Siirt and its Region, Continuous Education, Agricultural Studies, Technology Transfer Office, Turkish Language Teaching, Distance Education, Wildlife Conservation and Rehabilitation, and Teaching and Learning.
