Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, initially established as Niğde University under Selçuk University according to the Law No. 3837 published in the Official Gazette dated July 11, 1992. It was formed by transforming the Education School (1974) and Aksaray Vocational School (1986) in Niğde into the Faculty of Education, along with the inclusion of Niğde Vocational School (1974), Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (1987), and Aksaray Vocational School (1986). With subsequent developments, various faculties and schools were opened, including those in Aksaray and its districts, and the university expanded its scope, leading to the establishment of Aksaray University in 2006 by incorporating faculties and schools operating in Aksaray and its surroundings. Over the years, there were further changes and expansions, such as the establishment of new faculties like the Faculty of Islamic Sciences (2014), Faculty of Medicine (2015), and Faculty of Fine Arts (2016). In honor of the heroic act of Sergeant Major Ömer Halisdemir, who sacrificed his life to prevent a treacherous coup attempt against the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Nation, the university was renamed Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University on July 1, 2017, through Law No. 7033. Subsequent developments included the establishment of the Health Sciences Institute (2018) and the closure of certain faculties, leading to the formation of the Faculty of Sports Sciences (2019) from the former Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. Currently, the university operates with 14 faculties, 2 colleges, 1 conservatory, 4 institutes, 6 vocational schools, and 15 research and application centers, continuing its educational, research, and development activities.
