Kayseri University is a prominent institution of higher education with a historical background dating back approximately 6,000 years. Known as the "City of Scholars," Kayseri laid the foundation for higher education with the establishment of the Gevher Nesibe Hospital and Madrasah in 1206. The Gevher Nesibe Hospital and Madrasah, also recognized as the world's first medical school, was commissioned by Anatolian Seljuk Sultan I. Gıyâseddin Keyhusrev in honor of his sister, Gevher Nesibe Sultan, and operated until 1890. In the Republican era, the Gevher Nesibe Medical Faculty was established under Hacettepe University in 1969, followed by the Kayseri Business Faculty in 1977, marking the inception of Kayseri University. The name of Kayseri University was adopted in 1982 when it absorbed the Kayseri Higher Islamic Sciences Institute (now the Faculty of Theology at Erciyes University), and the Kayseri State Architecture and Engineering Academy (now the Faculty of Engineering at Erciyes University). The university has undergone significant expansion since its establishment. In 2018, it became an independent institution through the enactment of the "Law Amending Certain Laws and Decree-Laws in Higher Education" and integrated various faculties and vocational schools. Today, Kayseri University operates with five faculties, twelve vocational schools, one graduate school, and twelve application and research centers, making it the second-largest university in Kayseri in terms of student population.
